Mixed Doubles Changes
From: Stephen Demosthenes, UPTA Mixed Doubles League Coordinator
I have volunteered to coordinate the UPTA Mixed Doubles League for 2004. While it is still spring, and spring leagues have barely begun, being my first year as a coordinator, I want to be sure that we're ready when summer rolls around.
I am sending this to you from a list of captains of mixed doubles teams from last year. One of the reasons that I am sending this so early is that they have changed the flight categories for mixed doubles to even numbers, instead of .5 numbers. I.e., instead of 5.5, 6.5 etc...., this year the flight categories will be 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 and 10.0 for adults, and 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 for seniors. This may cause some shake-ups in how the team that you captained last year, will be this year. So, it really is not too early to start thinking about mixed doubles.
I suggest that you confer with the other captains in your club/community, to determine how you will captain and who will captain this year.
State championships are September 18-20 at Hilton Head. Here is a TENTATIVE CALENDER:
Captains/Flight Coordinators meeting        Tuesday, May 11 at Greenville Country Club
Register Teams beginning on                    Monday, May 17
Play begins                                             May 29-30 Weekend (for larger flights ONLY if
necessary; this is Cardinal Classic Weekend)
NO MATCHES                                        July 3-4
                                                              August 14-15 (Thornblade Tournament)
All play completed by                               September 4 (this will allow for some rain dates)
If you were a flight coordinator last year, or would like to be a flight coordinator this year, please let me know via return e-mail; or you may call me at (864) 271-8349.
If you are not going to captain this year, but know who is and should receive this e-mail, please forward.
I would appreciate if you would confirm that you got this, via reply e-mail.
If you have suggestions or comments please feel free to contact me. I'm kind of shooting from the hip right now (another reason for me starting so early), so if you know of something I've overlooked at this point please let me know.
